Chiusura settimanale:
Monday
Another impressive exhibition on painter Guido Cagnacci after the exhibitions “Marco Palmezzano, the Renaissance in Romagna” and “Silvestro Lega, the Macchiaioli and the Fifteenth Century”.
It is the most extensive monographic exhibition ever in Italy on the painter.
Programma
Guido Cagnacci, who was born in Santarcangelo di Romagna in 1601 and died in Vienna in 1663, creatively combined inputs from his knowledge of Naturalism of Caravaggio’s paintings and Reni’s idealism; the result is such a unique profile and character which does not fit into traditional classification.
To show how unique these experiences are, the exhibition displays works by young Cagnacci, paintings by Caravaggio and his followers, from Vouet to Van Honthorst, Serodine, Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, as well as works by Guido Reni and Guercino. Special attention is given to the context he first had been working in, through the display of works by local artists of the Emilia-Romagna region who followed and developed his style (Cristoforo Serra, the so-called “Centino”).
The works by Cagnacci for the town of Forlì are greatly emphasized: he executed two big canvases for the Cathedral: “The Glory of San Mercuriale” and “The Glory of San Valeriano”. These are his two last works of sacred painting.
Afterwards, Cagnacci mainly painted profane subjects. The paintings he is most famous for at international level are female nudes; he was very much appreciated and was called to work in Venice first and then in Vienna. Special emphasis is placed on this stage of Cagnacci’s painting activity.
The exhibition displays more than seventy works from Italian and foreign museums.
