The area just outside Porta Cotogni (the old gate to the town
centre) was named 'Piazzale della Vittoria' (Large square of
Victory) after the construction of a war memorial in 1928. The
monument was designed by architect Cesare Bazzani from Rome: his
project was selected through a national competition.
The monument is 30mt high: it is composed by a 22mt high Doric
column made in golden Trani stone, surmounted by a bronze sculpture
which represents victory in sea, air and land battles. The three
winged representations of victory, holding a votive flame, were
sculpted by sculptor B. Maniscalchi from Rome.
The two big blocks at the bottom of the memorial and the
corrisponding fountains are decorated with a series of reliefs
which were sculpted by Bernardino Boifava.
The reliefs represent the crucial moments in heroes' lives: attack,
defense, sacrifice and triumph. The spurt of water is instead a
living and symbolic sign of the permanent return of the sacrifice
for victory.
The war memorial was inaugurated in 1932, October 28th, on the 10th
anniversary of the Fascist revolution.
