Campigna

The small resort of Campigna, located amid the National Park of the Casentino Forests, is a lively tourist destination both in winter and summer. Campigna provides the visitor with beautiful natural sceneries and trails of varying levels of difficulty. The National Park has created in Campigna a natural trail amid fir-trees and a pathway specially suited to disabled people.

At the end of August the local tourist association of Campigna organizes the event "Dal Bosco al Desco" dedicated to deforestation methods and wood craftsmanship.

Analytical text

The ancient forest of Campigna gives its name to the National Park of the Casentino Forests, Mount Falterona and Campigna, too. It respects, and rightly so, both the scenic and the historical unity and the continuity of these wonderful centuries-old "cultivated" forests, which the Monks of Camaldoli, the Opera del Duomo of Florence, the Great Duke of Tuscany (who were in charge of them until the national unity) took special care of. The forest of Campigna was also called the "wood of the Opera" and actually in Campigna, already in the 16th century, the Opera del Duomo of Florence built a surveillance house which then became the hunting lodge of the Lorenas (today it is a hotel).
The Lorenas took good care of the forest too and used its resources rationally: "the Great Dukes walk" which still exists is a kind of expression of the tourist vocation of this area. Campigna is also well-known for its hospitable tourist welcome and is a lively tourist destination, both during the summer and winter months, with its well-equipped ski slopes for downhill and cross-country skiing.

Campigna is 24 km from Santa Sofia along the Bidente 4 provincial road.
