L'eterno e il tempo tra Michelangelo e Caravaggio

L'eterno e il tempo tra Michelangelo e Caravaggio. The great exhibition at the San Domenico di Forlì in 2018 puts on stage for the first time in a complete way and in a new exhibition itinerary the fascination of a century between a superb sunset, the last Renaissance, and a new luministic horizon, the baroque age.

The period between the completion of Michelangelo's Giudizio Universale in the Cappella Sistina (1541) and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio's brief affirmation in Rome is one of the most compelling and stimulating for the history of art.

The constructive fervor nourishes the demand for new sacred works, conceived with a view to a new readability and a widespread sense of piety. And while artists such as Girolamo Muziano and Federico Zuccari will be able to interpret a didactic narrative, in which painting returns to be an "illustrated book" for the illiterate, Federico Barocci will be able to combine, thanks to the rediscovery of Correggio, religious fervor and prebarocca sentimentality.

At the same time, the scruple of following the "true", the "verosimile" ends up developing a recovery in the autonomy of historical and naturalistic studies. Scientific research and the observation of the nature of scholars such as Aldrovandi and Ligozzi provide the warp to the new, incipient naturalism.

Bologna, the second capital of the Papal States, sees the Carracci painting (Ludovico, Annibale and Agostino) flourish with new earthly senses at the end of the century, to which the "timeless" art of Pulzone and Valeriano contrasts with Rome.

Caravaggio descends from Lombardy. He describes in his light that surrounds the shadow and that he spends from men to things, a new, desperate rigor. His pauperistic vocation is confronted, between the end of the old and the opening of the new century, with the pathetic classicism of Annibale Carracci and the baroque dynamism of Rubens.

From the last Michelangelo to Caravaggio, the Forlì exposition weaves an aesthetic thread of unique references that illustrates the birth of the modern age. A unique itinerary showing masterpieces by Raffaellol, Rosso Fiorentino, Lorenzo Lotto, Pontormo, Sebastiano del Piombo, Correggio, Bronzino, Vasari, Parmigianino, Daniele da Volterra, El Greco, Carracci, Barocci, Veronese, Tiziano, Zuccari, Reni and Rubens.

Between the two Michelangelo there is an innovative cultural path, in search of a reflection between the eternal and the historical values. And if every idea or ideal of human and earthly completeness is dissolved in the first; in the second, a humanity imbued with sin, barefoot and dirty knocks at the gates of heaven.
