From Saturday 22nd September to Sunday 6th January 2019, the San Domenico Museums host a new important photographic exhibition Viaggio, Racconto, Memoria which contains about 200 works in black and white by Ferdinando Scianna, a great Sicilian photographer.

Programma

From September 22, on the occasion of the Week of Good Living, in the exhibition spaces of the San Domenico Museums, will open to the public the great retrospective exhibition dedicated to Ferdinando Scianna.

With about 200 black and white photographs printed in different formats, the festival spans the entire career of the Sicilian photographer and develops along an articulated narrative path, built on different chapters and various layouts.

Ferdinando Scianna is one of the greatest masters of photography, not just Italian. Born in Bagheria in 1943, he began to get interested in this language in the Sixties, telling images of the culture and traditions of his region of origin, Sicily.

In more than 50 years of stories there is certainly no lack of suggestions: from Bagheria to the Bolivian Andes, from religious festivals - the debut of his career - to the experience in the fashion world, started with Dolce & Gabbana and Marpessa. Then the report (it is part of the Magnum photo journalistic agency), the landscapes, its thematic obsessions like mirrors, animals, things and finally the portraits of its great friends, masters of the art and culture world like Leonardo Sciascia, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jorge Louis Borges, just to name a few.

His long artistic journey winds through various themes - current events, war, travel, popular religiosity - all linked by a single common thread: the constant search for a form in the chaos of life.

Having decided to gather in this exhibition the most extensive anthology of his photographic works, with the usual and marked self-irony, Ferdinando Scianna, at the opening of the exhibition, chooses a text by Giorgio Manganelli:
"An anthology is a legitimate massacre, a massacre seen favorably by civil and religious authorities, a clean operation to tear the books that go to the world under the name of the author to make a stew, a timbale, a stew ... "
