Between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, in
Morgagni square, clean and smooth as a billiard table, were played
flaming games of "Palla al bracciale". This sport excited
intellectuals like Goethe, Leopardi and the future Pope Giovanni
Mastai Ferretti (Pius IX).
Facing the square, there is the convent of Santa Maria dei Servi,
where the Saint Laziosi Pellegrino lived(1265 - 1345): he was the
first of Romagna declared as saint after the adoption of the strict
procedures of the modern process of canonization. There now arises
the church, dedicated to him in the thirteenth century, rich in
works of art such as the Crucifix (school of Rimini) in the chapter
room and the funeral monument of Luffo Numai.
On the side of the square opposite the church stands the
magnificent complex built in the early decades of the eighteenth
century, thanks to the generosity of Cardinal Fabrizio
Paulucci.
Even after the Napoleonic suppression, the building was mainly used
for school activities, hence the name of Palazzo degli Studi. From
1836 to 1922 it was the site of Library, the Art Gallery and
Museums appendages.
Since 1979 hosts the Provincial Administration.
